Painting has a life all to itself that lives and breathes through formal elements like line, shape, composition, value, texture and color. But, when I make these particular paintings I am not focusing on these elements themselves, or how they will work together, or how the viewer will interpret them. Intuition and emotion when applying paint is what these works are about. The palette and shapes are a result of both how I feel and how I respond to the works in progress. The physical, tactile experience and subsequent emotions of mixing and putting paint on the flat surface of a canvas is a significant part of the process. If the colors, shapes, and space in the paintings impart just a fraction of this experience, then that would be good.
